The cast-steel commonwealth under frame was one of the most popular flat car designs of the 1950’s and 1960’s, with the Union Pacific being one of the largest users of the GSC/GSI under frames. They were stronger and more durable, but more importantly they eliminated much of the labor-intensive assembly required of conventional flat cars.
